The Baptist Catechism: Q. 1 (God the First & Chief Being)

Q. 1: Who is the first and chief being?
Answer: God is the first and chief being.
Scripture: Isaiah 44:6; 48:12; Psalm 97:9

Comment: God reveals Himself as the first and chief being through the manifestation of His glorious attributes in creation, providence, and salvation. We may also ask the question, “What is the chief end of man?”  The chief end of man is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever (Psa. 73:25; 1 Cor. 10:31).  To glorify God is to ascribe to Him the glory due His name, and to live in such a manner that is in conformity to His revealed will.  It only makes sense that man’s chief end is inseparably related to the chief being (God).  As the first and chief being, due to Him is praise and worship from His creatures (Rev. 4:11).
